Seduced, then betrayed...

So, you may recall my last post about the glories of selling out to a lingerie company. You know, steady paycheck, health insurance, creatively fulfilling and portfolio enhancing assignments. The first two came through, but the last one, well, let's just say the bamboozle was in full effect. It's gotten to the point where, if I chew my food right, I can make a serviceable polka dot print with my toilet wipe.

But what of that sexy, catalog cover assignment? Not without its fair share of "why am I working here?" moments, most notably when one of my more enlightened colleagues told me this image was "too black."

So now at least, I have some perspective. I'm through looking at this like it's a career - it's just a job. Unless things dramatically change, I'll stay here for as long as I need to and not a second longer. Just gotta remind myself to like, go the dentist and get my prostate checked before I do anything courageous.

There's a silver lining to all this though - I've felt a lot more impetus to create my own work now that I don't have to worry about investing any emotion / effort during the workday. I'm working on a new Terrell Quimby short comic - here's some of the preliminary sketches:

I'm also meeting up with more with some of my creative friends (check out Kev's new blog, and see my friend Joe's stuff here) to keep my mind stretched out. I'm even drawing during my lunch breaks. I think this is the start of something good.
